چکیده

In certain cells in the right upper quadrant of the abdominal ganglion of Aplysia depilans, a small excitatory post-synaptic potential (EPSP), produced by a weak stimulus to one pathway (test stimulus), underwent a prolonged facilitation when it was paired several times with a very strong stimulus to a second pathway (priming stimulus). In some cells this heterosynaptic facilitation was dependent upon the concomitant pairing of the two stimuli; in the right upper-quadrant giant cell the facilitation was independent of pairing (Kandel & Tauc, 1965). The stimulus parameters for optimal heterosynaptic facilitation in the giant cell were analysed in the preceding paper (Kandel & Tauc, 1965). The analysis of the mechanism underlying this facilitation is presented in this paper. This analysis was facilitated by the reliable identification of the right upperquadrant giant cell, as well as its large size (300-800 ,u). A preliminary note on this work has already been published (Kandel & Tauc, 1964).

Heterosynaptic facilitation in neurones of the abdominal ganglion of Aplysia depilans.

The cellular mechanisms whereby a neural network undergoes a longlasting change in its response to a given stimulus, when the latter is repeated or combined with other stimuli, are still mainly unexplored. An important beginning has been the investigation of the effects of physiological use and disuse and of tetanic nerve stimulation on the monosynaptic spinal reflex (Eccles, 1958, 1964). This ...

Multiple forms of facilitation produced by aversive tentacular stimuli in cerebral ganglion sensory neurons of Aplysia.

Aversive tentacular stimuli can produce both nonassociative and associative modification of head-waving behavior of Aplysia. Sensory neurons (the J/K cluster SNs) in the cerebral ganglion of Aplysia constitute an afferent pathway for aversive stimuli of the anterior tentacles. We used intracellular recording to examine plasticity in these neurons, particularly side-specific or site-specific alt...

Serotonin acts in the synaptic region of sensory neurons in Aplysia to enhance transmitter release.

An important mechanism that contributes to sensitization in Aplysia is heterosynaptic facilitation of the synaptic connections between sensory neurons (SNs) and motor neurons (MNs). Heterosynaptic facilitation, in turn, is associated with broadening of the spike in the SN. Spike broadening is readily observed in recordings from somata of SNs, and from growth cones of SNs in culture, but broaden...

Branch-specific heterosynaptic facilitation in Aplysia siphon sensory cells.

Aplysia siphon sensory cells exhibit heterosynaptic facilitation of transmitter release during both sensitization and classical conditioning of the siphon withdrawal response. In the present study, we asked whether facilitation must invariably enhance transmission at all terminals of a neuron or whether facilitation can instead occur at one set of terminals without also occurring at other termi...

Receptive fields and properties of a new cluster of mechanoreceptor neurons innervating the mantle region and the branchial cavity of the marine mollusk Aplysia californica.

The rostral LE cluster (rLE) is a new set of mechanoreceptor neurons of the abdominal ganglion innervating the mantle area, the branchial cavity, the gill and the siphon of the marine mollusk Aplysia californica Cooper. We have compared the organization of rLE cell receptive fields with that of three other clusters of sensory neurons in the abdominal ganglion (LE, RE and RF) that we have reanal...
